VDT’s Archive Project: A Living Resource

Since November 2025, VDT’s Archive Team has been working on a new digital project: gathering, reviewing, digitising and cataloguing materials from the company’s 33-year body of work to build an extensive online resource, partially hosted on this website.

The Work pages of our website host two visual timelines that chart our Productions and Special Projects. Throughout 2026, we will continue to populate these pages with rehearsal, production and contextualising videos, interviews with our Artistic Director and collaborators, photo galleries, soundtracks, technical plans, press reviews and audience feedback, past marketing materials, Vincent’s choreographic notebooks, and new engagement tasks designed to explore these online materials.

Our website can only host so much material, so behind the scenes we have a much larger digital repository containing the rest of our archive materials, as well as 10 boxes of physical manuscripts in storage. Both can be made privately accessible to researchers, students, peer artists and members of the general public on request.

Whilst the timelines on this site are still under construction, growing month by month, you can already search through a plethora of stimulating and insightful VDT resources here.

Alongside all our free resources, VDT is also in the process of creating a series of e-learning kits exploring Safeguarding, Creative Leadership and the Making Process, which will be available to purchase via this website in autumn 2026.

The archiving process began in 2024 with former VDT performer, collaborator and PhD student Phil Sangar organising a plethora of VHS and Mini DV videotapes, CD-ROMs, DVDs, MiniDiscs and paper-based materials with Vincent over several weeks.

VDT then employed BA Dance in Education graduate Charlotte Adams, from Canterbury Christ Church University and supported by the Sidney De Haan Centre for Arts and Health, to scan and digitise all past physical materials, which now form a significant part of the archive.

After a period of disruption in 2025, when our old studio at New England House closed and the company was temporarily relocated to Community Base in central Brighton, we were finally able to focus on a digital production phase to bring the archive to life online.

In November 2025, VDT appointed Archive Project Co-ordinator Charlotte (Lotte) Allan, who drove the project for six months, having completed a similar project for Clod Ensemble earlier that year. Lotte worked with VDT to break the back of the process, supported by Archive Project Assistant Ben Tofach-Marmur, who helped build a systematic file tree and digital storage system, whilst Vincent worked concurrently with VDT’s Web Developer Hans De Kkretser’s Creative Director Raffaele Malanga to develop our new website and the timelines discussed above.

We gathered digital files from hard drives, laptops, online management systems, YouTube, Flickr and SoundCloud into one place and, as of July 2026, are still only around 35% through the detailed process of sorting and refiling approximately 20 TB of material. It’s an ongoing process!

Following the end of Lotte’s six-month contract, Ben has now stepped into the role of Archive and Marketing Lead (July 2026) to drive the project forward, with support from photographer Hanna O’Hara, who is organising and filing photographic materials from multiple platforms into one place.

Charlotte, Ben and Hanna will continue working on this project into spring 2027, when we hope both the digital and manuscript archives will find a permanent home within a national archive. Watch this space for further news!
