Lying in the Gutter, Looking at the Stars

2004

In a new work, commissioned by the Shaxpir Festival for Young Audiences 2004, Lying in the Gutter, Looking at the Stars was Charlotte Vincent’s third collaboration with x.IDA Dance Company in Linz.

Lying in the Gutter, Looking at the Stars asked some fundamental questions about life as young Europeans: What is left for us to believe in? What are we scared of? What dreams are held for the future? How do we define hope? Dark, humorous and fragile, this work charted the frustrations and hopes of six young dancers from Austria, Columbia, Sweden and Poland caught in a world filled with carelessness and conflict. Reflecting on the range of personal responses to these questions, the piece was accompanied by a soundtrack made up entirely of Elvis Presley songs. Elvis at his most histrionic, Elvis at his most romantic, Elvis in tears.

Lying in the Gutter, Looking at the Stars was commissioned by x.IDA Dance Company, Shaxpir Festival Festival for Young Audiences, with support from Bruckner Conservatory Linz, Posthof Linz and the Arts Department of the Upper Austrian Government.
