Straight Talking

2011, 12 mins

Straight Talking was chosen as part of Bare Bones The Decade Tour autumn 2011, shown alongside other commissioned work by Jasmin Vardimon, Hofesh Shechter, Luca Silvestrini and Carol Brown.

Borrowing from Yvonne Rainer’s ‘No to spectacle, no to virtuosity, no to transformation, and no to magic and make believe and transcendency of the star image, no to the heroic…’ Straight Talking is one man’s attempt to break free of convention to ‘get beyond the beautiful dance’. Awkward, contorted and wrestling with his own physicality, this solo work (originally made with dancer Robert Clark and performed by Kip Johnson) is a backlash against form, a manifesto against convention, created for reasons only he can fathom.
