Virgin Territory Workshops
‘It opened my mind to both sides of the situation and made me really think about the sexualisation of both boys and girls’ Participant, Brighton
Throughout 2016/17 VDT are delivering VIRGIN TERRITORY WORKSHOPS with young people (14+) and adults to investigate the challenges that young people face as they forge their own identities in an image-complex world. The workshops reflect on how our hyper-sexualised, digitised culture is affecting young people’s relationships, personal choices and sexual expectations.
VIRGIN TERRITORY WORKSHOPS take place in a ‘staged space’ with participants responding to a series of craft based tasks and filmed sequences of the live work. The workshops are a space to express opinions, learn something new and be creative and can be adapted to suit the needs of different groups.
Participant’s responses are shared online in workshop photo galleries, which you can browse below. Some of the initial participant responses informed the VIRGIN TERRITORY live production, while others created a ‘user generated’ exhibition alongside the work at The Place. A selection of new participant responses will accompany the VIRGIN TERRITORY INSTALLATION tour in 2017.
Participants can also contribute to VDT’s digital campaign for change that runs alongside workshops. The campaign invites people to at write and share one positive practical action anyone can do to combat the pressures of everyday sexism and online culture. You can see the hundreds of contributions so far by searching #VDTEverydayAction.
