Professional Development and Participation

Vincent Dance Theatre offers a wide range of educational and participatory workshops, classes and residencies as part of our core company activity. Led by Artistic Director Charlotte Vincent and core company members, VDT's participation activity emphasises three major strands of work.

  • Within the dance profession (technical training; professional development work; mentoring)
  • Within the wider community (special needs; disability groups; over 50's; young people)
  • Within the formal education system (students in schools, colleges, universities)

Taking place in theatre venues and dance agencies across the UK and abroad VDT’s Professional Development work offers technical skills training and a choreographic understanding of how we make work and why. Thought provoking, physically demanding classes, workshops and residencies deepen participants’ understanding of dance theatre practice and address the creative questions involved in making devised work through discussion, improvisation and play.

VDT regularly teaches students within schools, colleges and universities. The company’s production work is studied at BTEC and degree level within the formal education system and is often written about in student dissertations. To aid student studies, Contextualising Packs that offer detailed insight into the company’s work are available via our shop.

Historically VDT has delivered a huge range of community participation work within the wider community including self-initiated projects with young people, people with learning difficulties, people with disabilities and the over 50’s. The company is interested in the link between professional and community dance practice, and the way in which the content, form, aesthetic and accessibility of one discipline informs the other. Community projects have taken place across the UK in youth centres, swimming pools, ballrooms, dance agencies, prisons, sports clubs, art galleries, theatres, community venues and hospitals.

More About Our Workshops

‘A whole bodily experience - by that I mean physical, vocal, aural, sensory experience. A really exciting and fresh opportunity - rarely available. Would love to work more with these ideas.’ Student, University of Winchester, February 08

What Can We Deliver? We recognise that every workshop and project is different so all of our educational/professional development packages are tailored to a group’s specific needs.

‘Really relevant and delivered at exactly the right level. The workshop leaders listened to what we needed and delivered.’ Teacher, Rawmarsh Comprehensive School, Rotherham

This is a chance for students/professionals to work in-depth and from a dance theatre approach. Creatively facilitated through task based work and an in-depth approach to the devising process, a professional development workshop or residency can often culminate in a final sharing or performance.

‘Excellent day! Lots of new ways of working. Excellent workshop leaders - just the right tone and level. Would love to have another day to explore further.’ Dance Artist from Newbury Contemporary Company

One day workshop: all abilities Experience level can range from no experience (amateur, beginner adults) to very experienced (undergraduates, graduates and professionals). These groups may already exist or may be formed specifically for the workshops

Music workshop An opportunity for participants to explore the interface between music and movement, and the devising and working processes of VDT. This workshop can be tailor made for music students/artist, dance students/artists or an integration of both.
