In 2000, Vincent Dance Theatre was awarded £35,000 to run Germinate, a two-year programme of work looking at the interface between dance and digital technology in both the community and professional environment. Year One delivered four exceptional projects for young people (14- 25 year olds across the Yorkshire region), the production of four digital video shorts, the setting up of Vincent Dance Theatre's web site, the buying of necessary technical hardware and the development of new links with key partners in the region.
Orbital was a week-long residency involving 12 local young male skateboarders and roller-bladers from Bridlington and Hull, a hip hop DJ, two film makers and the Dance Development Officer of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council which took place over Easter 2001 as part of the Eastern Connections Dance Festival. Orbital looked at developing movement skills in disillusioned young men and culminated in a performance at Bridlington Royal Spa, on 14th April 2001 for the public, family and friends of the participants. The residency also allowed the making of a documentary video short, screened for the men, their probation officers and members of the East Riding Council to lobby for the creation of a skate park on Bridlington seafront. The Orbital video was shown at the Arts Council's Digital Dance Day at the Riverside Studios, London on 15th December 2001, where Charlotte Vincent was invited to give a presentation on the Germinate programme, and is available from this website.
