GRAVITY AND LEVITY
Shift

Gravity & Levity was set up in 2003 by Lindsey Butcher to explore the creative and expressive potential of aerial dance. Charlotte Vincent, Charles Linehan and Luke Cresswell/Steve McNicholas (Stomp co creators) will make Shift. The approach to this particular show will be ‘design led’ (Michele Weaver) working towards building an environment in which to site an evening of work, to explore not only vertical dance but an all-round experience for a promenading audience. This will develop and expand upon Gravity & Levity's initial investigations in Taking Flight, the company’s first full evening of work, which toured in 2005.

The project works with the performers’ skills as experienced and accomplished dancers, using harness techniques, flying, counterbalance, free climbing and rope skills to redefine what & where a dance floor can be and where the performers control and are controlled by their environment. Through extensive investigation of the human body in motion and challenging the performers and collaborators to push their own experience of movement through changing orientations we aim to open up the language created in suspending bodies - the ‘freedom of restraint’. Charlotte will make this work in February 2008. The work tours spring 2008.
